Description Narratives are one of the most influential forms of communication that people use to make sense of themselves and the world around them. In this module we will analyse narratives from a range of different media, including written, conversational, audio-visual and digital formats and which are used in a range of different ‘every-day’ contexts, such as advertising, news reporting, video-games, social media and educational contexts. The module will cover a range of linguistic approaches for studying narrative, drawing on stylistics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Students will be expected to analyse the linguistic aspects of storytelling and to relate this to wider social and cultural questions about power and identity.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify relevant features of narrative data using appropriate linguistic frameworks;
  • Critically evaluate scholarly literature across the field of narrative studies;
  • Design and carry out a small scale research project that investigates narrative from a linguistic perspective;
  • Interpret the analysis of narratives in the light of their wider social, cultural and mediated contexts.
