We tend to approach the study of literature from national perspectives: English Literature, American Literature, Indian Literature in English. But authors and texts have always travelled, looking outside national boundaries for inspiration. Literatures have often developed across borders, empires and global contexts. This module introduces students to transnational (literally, ‘across nations’) approaches to literature. Students will explore a number of themes, including migration, nationhood, textual circulation and translation, in texts from across historical periods.
