Description This module will contribute to preparing students for their placements, where they will work under the supervision of qualified professionals in applied psychology or psychology-informed disciplines within the NHS, schools, forensic settings and other services. Sessions will introduce some key concepts in applied psychology, including: contexts of delivery (e.g., working with organisations and systems); ways of working in applied psychology (e.g., scientist-practitioner and reflective-practitioner); elements of core practice (e.g., communications skills and use of supervision); core concepts (e.g., psychological theories and models); learning from case studies; understanding difficulties and distress (e.g., formulation versus diagnostic systems); facilitating change (e.g., assessment-formulation-intervention links); and evaluating practice.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • To critically evaluate methods / models of supervision and their relevance for the work of applied professional practice.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the generic principles / fundamentals underpinning applied professional practice as relevant for clinical, forensic and educational psychologists.
  • Demonstrate a conceptual and practical understanding of the links between assessment, formulation, intervention and outcome evaluation.
  • To critically evaluate the quality of links between assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation as they relate conceptually and practically to applied professional practice.
  • To understand and identify the distinctive conceptual contributions of the main theoretical models in applied psychology practice, and to be able to develop critiques of them.
Assessment 37052-01 : Critical Review of a case study : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

3000-word critique of a published psychological case study (to include a quality evaluation framework), which includes an additional constructively critical commentary of a main psychological theory / model (100%).

Reassessment:

N/A. There are no reassessment opportunities for modules taken as part of the final state of a classified honours programme.
