Description
This module gives students the opportunity to learn and hear about a range of cutting-edge topics across the spectrum of applied clinical, forensic and educational psychology practice, thus benefitting either their placement-specific learning or their general knowledge in applied psychology. A series of student-led group seminar sessions and individual presentations introduces students to topic areas in applied psychology and provides a forum for discussing their learning on placement, for connecting their experiences to an academic and psychologically informed evidence base, whilst allowing reflections on personal and personal development. This module helps students develop knowledge and skills in both scientist-practitioner competencies as well as reflective-practitioner competencies.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Select and apply critical principles for the purpose of critically evaluating key topics in the study of applied psychology.
Systematically describe, discuss and evaluate the assessment or treatment of important / contemporary topics in the psychological literature.
Critically evaluate the links between theory, evidence and practice in applied psychology.
Work effectively in small groups, and in an individual presentation, to develop skills in independent and group-based learning to communicate complex issues in systematic and creative ways.
To describe, discuss and critically evaluate a placement-specific activity that can be presented from a psychological perspective and which demonstrates self-direction and originality of thought in tackling an issue(s) related to applied psychology practice / research.
Write a reflective commentary on the development of personal and professional development skills (resulting from a psychology in action topic / activity), which should demonstrate reflections on aspects of initiative, personal responsibility for learning, decision-making, working with others, and the planning and implementation of tasks.
