An introduction to practical, ethical and design issues in applied psychology research. Example topics:
• Research in a Professional Context: preparing for professional working environments; the rewards and challenges of applied research.• The Status of Psychological Knowledge: epistemology and ontology. • Framing a research / literature review question. • User involvement.• Writing a Literature Review and Annotated Bibliography.• Seeking Ethical Approval for Applied Research.• Audit and Research for Service Planning.• Intervention Research & RCTs.• Evaluating Applied Research / Evidence / Literature for quality.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Write a comprehensive Annotated Bibliography that systematically addresses a contemporary area of applied psychology practice / research that contributes to the development of new insights for the field.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of how to conduct a systematic literature search.
Develop higher level skills in being able to evaluate critically current research, critically evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them, and to appraise the quality of research in a field of applied psychology practice /research.
To synthesise complex data / findings into a research-informed conclusion and communicating this to a non-specialist audience.
To demonstrate reflective-practitioner competencies that shows evidence of developments in self-direction, problem-solving, judgement-making, and personal and professional skills.
