Description
This module allows students to study with a research group in the school, working to review current medical technologies in use and compare with nationally provided data on expected outcomes.
Technologies reviewed may be within the BHP group of hospitals, or, for those working at distance, a suitable clinical environment close to them, and must include a new/novel medical device recommended for adoption by NICE, whether as the technology in use, or as recommended replacement for a chosen technology.
Academics working in the healthcare technology area will offer a range of projects and students will select from these areas of interest. The projects will focus on experimental, modelling or a combination of these areas and expose students to the cutting edge of the healthcare technology research done in the school and internationally. The exact nature of the research project topic will vary, but the learning outcomes below encapsulate the key skills gained during the project.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically evaluate the current literature in the area of their research project;
Apply this knowledge in an original way to plan their own independent research project;
Evaluate and select techniques applicable to their research project;
Design and perform experiments and analyse their data in the context of the area of research;
Prepare a business plan relating to the healthcare technology product that they are working on;
Present their research as a concept pitch to a panel of senior local clinical and purchasing decision makers and;
Write a project report.
