Description This project provides students with the opportunity to undertake an individual research project or study, with the aim of acquiring new information and/or data to test a hypothesis. These projects can be laboratory based, educational, bioinformatics, systematic review, clinical/community based or business plans.

This is a complex, multistep process, and the project provides training in identifying a hypothesis, designing a research approach and evaluating the available literature / data on the topic. Students will be expected to acquire technical / analytical skills, interpret data and present the results in an appropriate written format
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Conduct a detailed study of the literature to define precise research questions and the investigative approaches to be used
  • Design and organise research, including the identification of a hypothesis and aims of the study, and the scale and research approach(es) to be used.
  • Acquire technical and / or analytical skills
  • Know how to overcome problems / adopt an alternative approach when the research conducted does not fit with prediction
  • Collect, record, analyse and interpret data
  • Integrate new data into existing knowledge and formulate new ideas
  • Present results and ideas in an appropriate written format.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: 100% coursework comprising:
Literature review (2500 words) - 15%
Written dissertation in style of research paper - 7000 words - 60%
Viva - 20%
Supervisor assessment - 5%
Reassessment: Academic failure: Students are required to repeat failed components only Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit in the absence extenuating circumstances could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes
