Description Effective writing skills allow scientists to share their research findings with non-scientific audiences and other members of their discipline. Such skills are also essential for securing research funding and building collaborations across disciplines. The module aims, through seminars and workshops to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the process of scientific writing for a variety of needs such as journal article publication, grant applications, ethical approval applications as well as discussing the strategies that are used for communication to different stakeholders (scientists, grant giving bodies, patients, the general public etc.) The module will consider the roles of all parties such as grant-making bodies, journals, reviewers, editors and the public in the processes involved in applications for funding and publication. The module will also explore the ethical issues related to research and scientific writing such as academic integrity, authorship, and dissemination of unexpected results. Sessions will be taught by cross-university practitioners.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Show an ability to express complex practical issues into a coherent written argument
  • Show competence in distinguishing between and in writing various types of scientific formats
  • Understand the roles of all parties involved in the processes of paper publication and grant applications
  • Show an understanding of the ethics surrounding research and scientific communication
  • Recognise how to adapt primary scientific material into a format appropriate for different media and audiences.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments:
1. 2 hour written examination - 50%
2. In course assessments: (total 50%):

Extended piece of writing which may be of various medium (e.g. mini grant proposal or public information sheet with written defence or piece of writing for public communication

Reassessment:
Academic failure: Students are required to repeat failed components only
Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes
