Exclusions
Description This course will focus on the physiology and pathology of blood and its widespread use in diagnostics and therapies. A variety of areas of molecular and cellular bioscience will be presented with an emphasis on new technologies and new developments in Haematology. The course will also cover the broad subjects of Blood Cells and their Biology, Haematological Malignancy, Red Cell Disorders, Transplantation, Haemostasis/Thrombosis and Transfusion Medicine. The course will enable students to develop an advanced theoretical understanding and the practical techniques needed to apply those theories in either a research or clinical setting in the future.

The module should equip students with the skills needed to enhance future opportunities in biomedical science careers in Haematology within hospitals, academic research/teaching and commercial laboratories/companies.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge and understanding of laboratory techniques used for the diagnosis and treatment of different types of haematological disorders
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of data interpretation including the validation, evaluation and analysis of data obtained in the research and clinical settings.
  • Demonstrate a critical appreciation of current developments in the fields of diagnosis and treatment haematological disorders
Assessment 37200-01 : Overall Module Mark : Mixed (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

The module will be assessed by a combination of a written examination and course work
1. 2 hour written examination - 50% (Semester 1)
2. Coursework - 50% (Semester 1)

The course work component will include the following:

1. Essay on topical area of interest in haematology
2. Short Synoptic presentation of essay content to group Reassessment:
Academic failure: Students are required to repeat failed components only
Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes
