Description
This module will continue to introduce students to Public Health and Epidemiology . The overall aim of this module is to prepare students to move onto the clinical aspects of the course, with greater understanding Public Health and Epidemiology.. There is emphasis on independent study and reflective learning in order that students consolidate their learning from clinical observations and lectures, and to prepare for small group practical teaching sessions.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of public health theories and concepts and their relevance to UK health policies
Demonstrate an understanding of the oral epidemiology, UK dental surveys, and data analysis
Describe the role of health promotion in terms of the changing environment, community and individual behaviours to deliver health gain
Discuss the basic principles of a population health approach including demographic and social trends, UK and international oral health trends, determinants of health and inequalities in health
Evaluate evidence-based prevention and apply appropriately
Explain the principles of planning oral health care for communities to meet needs and demands
Describe the dental and wider healthcare systems dental professionals work within including health policy and organisation, delivery of healthcare and equity
Demonstrate an understanding of oral health promotion and oral heath prevention
Assessment: • Coursework (analysis of epidemiological and public health data/1500-2000 words) 70% • Student Student Group project (marked individually to a set rubric) 30%
Reassessment: Coursework will be the same format as the first assessment. An alternative individual assignment aligned to the rubric from the first sitting will be set for the group project.
