This module looks at the development of the practice and the profession of medicine, and its interaction with broader society, from c1750-2000 within Europe and North America (with a focus on the United Kingdom).
In addition to reviewing the major medical developments of their time and assessing their impact, the module will also discuss the emergence of the medical profession as well as the changing relationship between medical practitioners and patients. Furthermore, in addition to discussing a range of factors that played a major role in enhancing medicine at this time, specific attention will be paid to successive government policies and legislation throughout the period, culminating in the creation of the NHS
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the key issues and methods in the History of Medicine, including a more detailed understanding of the specific topics covered in the course of 12 topic session
Use historical methods of analysis and enquiry, and apply them appropriately to solve specific problems or answer particular questions
Develop a conceptual understanding that allows them to critically evaluate the work of contemporary historians, and to communicate that work to specialist and non-specialist audiences
Demonstrate the ability to manage their own learning
