This module introduces students to, the legal and ethical framework for professional dental practice and the basic concepts of consent, confidentiality, negligence, truth telling and ethical research in a healthcare setting. The overall aim of this module is to prepare students to undertake a professional clinical qualification by facilitating the development of professional to know their legal responsibilities as a member of the dental profession.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Recognise the role of the General Dental Council.
Describe the legal and ethical responsibilities of the dental team.
Explain and evaluate the principles of providing safe and responsible care to patients taking into account issues relating to equality and diversity.
Recognise the impact of personal behaviour on the healthcare environment and on wider society.
