Exclusions
Description This module will continue to introduce students to clinical aspects of dentistry, , Patient Management and Special Care Dentistry. The overall aim of this module is to prepare students to move onto the clinical aspects of the course, with greater understanding of patient management and population’s health. The module provides a foundation for the various skills, attitudes and knowledge required for clinical practice. There is emphasis on independent study and reflective learning in order that students consolidate their learning from clinical observations and lectures, and to prepare for small group practical teaching sessions.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate effective communication with patients, other members of the dental team and other healthcare professionals using psychological principles
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to modify their communication skills for patients with a range of disabilities and an understanding of ethical issues related to disability.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how psychological development in children and adults relates to dentistry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how psychology relates to dental patient management and treatment
  • Identify theories of behaviour change and how this applies to clinical dentistry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the medical, social and bio-psychosocial models of disability.
  • Develop an understanding of the works of Special Care Dentistry.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of simple restorative and prosthetic techniques, methods of assessing periodontal health.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of medical histories in dental practice.

37515-02 : Communication Assessment : (MDS) Oral presentation (30%)
37515-03 : Charting Competency : (MDS) Structured Clinical Assessment (0%)
37515-04 : Infection Control Competency : (MDS) Structured Clinical Assessment (0%)
37515-05 : Photography Competency and Reflection in CAFS : (MDS) Structured Clinical Assessment (20%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
  • Continuous Assessment: 50%
  • Communication Assessment: 30% (5 minute preparation, 7 communication role play of the scenario) (taken in Semester 2)
  • Charting Competency – Pass/Fail (unlimited attempts) student will be allowed to progress into semester 2 if this gateway is not passed but will not be able to see patients until the competency has been passed.
  • Infection Control Competency
  • Photography Competency and Reflection in CAFS 20%

Reassessment:

Will be the same format as the first assessment.
