Description This module will deliver the individual restorative component specialties of dental practice (Conservative Dentistry, Prosthetic Dentistry and Periodontology). It enables students, in a controlled environment to gain experience of specific clinical needs presented by patients and to be taught by specialists and consultants. Communication, organisational and team working skills are developed throughout this module with emphasis being placed on the student’s interaction with both patients and other dental care professionals.

The care of patients always takes precedence over other concerns. All patient treatment is carried out with minimal trauma and discomfort, ensuring adherence to infection control and avoiding any danger to the patient’s health. In this module students undertake the treatment required to maintain the oral health of their patients. Students develop their skills and independence as they progress though this and the following two years of clinical teaching.

The teaching is carried out in the School of Dentistry and students spend their time in clinical placements and the virtual simulation suite, developing their diagnostic skills and practical ability whilst treating patients. The module comprises a high proportion of face to face clinical teaching as well as clinical lectures and tutorials. Continuous assessment takes place within these contact hours.

Running alongside direct patient care will be a stream of enhanced clinical simulation, which will take place in spare clinical bays when students do not have their own patients requiring treatment (sessions where patients cancel, do not attend, or students are timetabled to assist but are not required chairside) and the virtual simulation suite. This will increase the opportunity for students to build on and enhance their clinical skills alongside patient treatment sessions.

This module introduces and builds on learning outcomes for clinical care that are repeated in subsequent years and other modules reflecting the spiral learning of the regulated programme. Those affecting patient safety must be fully met, whereas those with clinical activity, would be expected at a learner or novice standard.

This is a repeat only module (see university regulation 11.11.10)
Learning Outcomes Please contact the School of Dentistry for details of learning outcomes associated with this module.
