Description
The module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to undertake an in depth piece of research based on prior learning in the Biological Sciences, Human Disease, Cell Biology or Dental Materials aspects of the course.
The module will equip students with the skills needed to conduct the research. This would be a topic of direct relevance to their future interests. Students will be required to undertake some work in research methods, guided by a research active member of teaching staff. This will allow them to identify a research topic, critically appraise the relevant literature, design, perform a study and analyse the results culminating in submission of a dissertation. A project supervisor will be identified with the help of the module leads. If necessary, ethical approval for the proposed project will be obtained. Students will work under close supervision and have tutorials with their supervisor on a regular basis.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Obtain any necessary research ethical approval for the proposed project.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate the research effectively
Demonstrate satisfactory library skills and resource location
Develop critical thinking and research skills
Critically reflect and analyse the professional, ethical and legal implications of the research study. Demonstrate competence in conducting research study.
Critically appraise literature relating to research topic and synthesise findings to formulate research question.
Justify selection of research approach, design and data analysis within dissertation.
Synthesise data to develop insights informed by existing knowledge and contributing to new knowledge.
