Description

This module brings together all teaching in the course for a final assessment. In order to be entered into the final assessment, students must reach a safe beginner level, this is not necessarily a prerequisite of other modules. Where additional support is needed, students are offered an education plan to support additional teaching or placement opportunities.

In order to support students in consolidating their teaching from all areas in preparation, tutors work with students to provide:

  • Group tutorials in clinical specialities
  • Lectures from additional stakeholders
  • 1:1 support where appropriate
  • Additional placement opportunities where appropriate
  • Seminars
  • Reviewing and revising drafts of case submissions
  • Practice paper sessions
  • Practice case examinations

The final assessment comprises two parts:

  • Finals Part 1 (January)
    • Written Paper
    • Speciality based OSCE

  • Finals Part 2 (Clinical - April
    • Clinical Skills
      • General Dental Practice (GDP continuous assessment grade)
      • Combined Speciality Grades (last continuous assessment grade)
      • A Clinical Case Portfolio
    • The Unseen Cases

The culmination of the course is the Final BDS examination. This examination has a written and clinical component. Satisfactory completion of all other modules as well as attainment of the minimum clinical requirements is a prerequisite of entry to this module.

An exam board will be held to determine entry into this module.

For Part 1:

  • All teaching and assessments must have been completed for the whole BDS programme to a satisfactory level (50% or above)
  • The minimum clinical requirements are reviewed, and any concerns are discussed. Students may be provided additional support to reach the requirements to sit Part 2. Selected students may be advised not to sit Finals and to defer their assessment.

  • Recognise the importance of lifelong learning and apply it to practice
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Assessments:

This module is assessed by both written and clinical examinations at the Final BDS examination. Compensation is allowed within, but not between the written and clinical sections of the final examination.

In order for students to be entered into the Final Examination, they are required to have completed a range of clinical requirements across the speciality and Clinical Practice teaching areas.

In addition, there are a range of speciality assessments which inform speciality teaching percentages for the Final BDS assessment as well as providing opportunities for feedback. Students who do not achieve a satisfactory continuous assessment grade and have undertaken a period of remedial teaching. If students gain a satisfactory grade following this remedial teaching students will be entered into finals. If still unsatisfactory they will not be entered into the final BDS examination

Finals Part 1- (40% of the assessment)

Written Paper has five structured long answer questions based on a clinical scenario derived from pairings of GDP and one speciality area drawn at random). Length 3 hours.

OSCE consists of multiple behaviour based scenarios. Length 3 hours.

Students will be allocated a percentage mark and for the purposes of the Final Examination

Compensation Rule: Part 1

To pass part 1 candidates must achieve an overall mark of 50% with no less than 45% in either component. A mark below 45% for either component is an automatic fail

Finals Part 2 (Clinical) – (60% of the assessment)

Students must have passed Finals Part 1 for entry into Finals Part 2. Finals Part 2 has two sections:

A Clinical Case Portfolio Section (30%)

A portfolio of clinical cases that the student has treated themselves, ideally in the latter part of the course.

The candidate will be examined in an oral examination on up to two cases at the examiners discretion from the Clinical Case Portfolio and awarded a percentage grade. The examination will be conducted by internal examiners with quality assurance from a team of external examiners.

Unseen Clinical Case Section (30%)

The student is given 30 minutes to take analyse the prepared history, examination and records of an adult and a paediatric unseen clinical case, reach a diagnosis and determine a treatment plan for a previously unseen case/s. They have a structured viva based upon this with two examiners and a percentage is awarded. A percentage of between 45% and 49% in one case but not both can be compensated.

These scores are combined in the Final Examination.

Award of Distinction in Clinical Dentistry

Students unsuccessful in Finals Part 1, are given the opportunity of a reassessment in May. If they are not successful, they are not entered into Finals Part 2 and are required to withdraw.
