Description

Students will have the opportunity to undertake a special study module in a field of their choice with the intention of furthering interest in a field outside of the core learning outcomes of the course. By undertaking this after Finals, there will be time to explore a field in depth, the module is compulsory, but the format and structure will vary considerably with some being clinical and others less clinical.

Additionally, in the period after finals, a selection of GDP clinics will also be available to complete treatments keeping students clinically active.

Students will choose from a series of options (but not limited to); numbers will be limited so a preference will be made and allocation made according to preference.:

  • Implants
  • Toothwear
  • Aesthetics
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Public Health
  • Treatment Planning
  • Special Care
  • Trauma
  • Paediatrics
  • Mental Health

Students will be expected to spend some time on independent study and preparation of material and presentations.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate enhanced knowledge with the ability to analyse an area of practice
  • Demonstrate extended expertise in a selected area of practice
  • Demonstrate the ability to access further resources to self-direct learning
  • Demonstrate a willingness to engage in reflective practice relating to their learning experiences
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work effectively in groups and contribute to the achievement of common goals
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of the regulator with respect to scope of practice
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Satisfactory and successful engagement with the teaching and activities. Assessment will vary from module to module. Pass / Fail
It would be expected that students:
1. Attend, engage with and contribute to all identified compulsory teaching sessions.2. Demonstrate a reflective approach to the teaching
3. Complete the required elements of the module as part of their Personal Development Portfolio

Reassessment:

Resubmission of any unsatisfactory components.
