Exclusions
Description The module will continue and expand the sets of research and experimental skills introduced in the 1st year IRES module and continued in Year 2 semester 1 within the Stem cell and differentiation module. The point of this SSSP module is for the student to engage in a research project they have selected (from a range of projects) to develop their independent learning skills and understanding of research. This module will feedforward and help prepare the students for their third year dissertation project in year 3 semester 2.

The students will work in a group and select one area from a selection of various themes within a defined research area to develop during this module. These can include amongst others; research areas delivered within the Biomedical course, translational research skills and Enterprise and marketing, under the supervision of the Research Area Leader the students group will identify an area of research to investigate or develop a business plan to market in depth respectively.

Module organisation:
Research Area Leads (RALs) will be involved and each will define a research topic area.
Business Area Leads (BALs) will be involved and each will define a research product area

To each RAL or BAL a group of up to 20 students will be allocated.

Allocation of module stream will be based on student preference, with each ranking the areas offered and then sorted into highest ranked group accordingly. Where oversubscription on a module occurs, students will be allocated to their next highest ranked module.

With regards to students allocated to a RA, all students will be exposed to the full repertoire of research which the RAL is either directly involved in and or interested in and with assistance from the RAL each group will select a theme for further study and this will become the focus of their literature review.

With regards to students allocated to a BAL, students will initially be grouped together (~4 per group) and with support and guidance from the BAL a research product area will be defined and each group will select or be allocated to one of these products. This will form the basis of the students’ reflective essay on the development of a business plan. Each student will have a supervisor for their project.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate the skills of independent learning, utilising library and computer- based learning to resource relevant information and seek expert advice as necessary.
  • Be able to either;
    a) Formulate relevant and specific hypotheses to test various research questions, justify and provide a rationale for these proposals.
    or
    b) Formulate a business proposal and provide evidence of a marketing strategy to develop a minimal viable product (MVP)
  • Be able to either;
    a) Analyse the research question to generate reasonable and effective practical approaches to examine and investigate the question
    or
    b) Evaluate the business proposal that incorporates feedback from potential customers and demonstrates insight into how to improve and develop the original MVP.
  • Produce required written work and oral presentation (poster) in an appropriate style and structure demonstrating the approach used to analyse the research question using appropriate language and correctly referencing all source material.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
The assessment will be dependent on the module chosen.

Research Module:
Main assessment a literature review on a specific research question generated by the student, within the research area proposed by the Research Topic Lead.

Business and Enterprise Module:
Main assessment a reflective essay on all elements required to develop a research plan to launch a biomedical product.

Reassessment:
If a student fails the literature review or reflective essay – (s)he will have to re-write and re-submit (same research question).

Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes.
