Description This Level I placement module provides the opportunity for students in Humanities subjects in the College of Arts and Law to experience and reflect on their discipline within primary and/or secondary education and outreach contexts. Students will be placed in schools to observe or shadow teachers in their own disciplines or in adjacent disciplines, and where possible and appropriate to deliver enrichment activities themselves or to act as mentors in those schools. Students will also attend a series of lectures and workshops from visiting speakers focussing on pedagogy and curricula in their subjects, on careers and training for teachers, and on outreach and engagement activities at Universities (e.g. Q&A with current trainee teachers, presentations from educational charities or training providers). Students will be supported within their departments in small group seminars during which they will reflect on their own learning and plan for their assessment. Students will also explore education and outreach more widely, outside school settings, for instance by researching educational facilities and resources in local museums, heritage sites, or other cultural institutions and by participating in or observing outreach activities within their departments.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate growing capacity for reflective practice, drawing on their own experience of delivering and observing teaching and outreach activities
  • Research and evaluate educational materials and activities aimed at primary and/or secondary school audiences
  • Select, evaluate and/or produce appropriate resources for communicating their subject in school or outreach contexts.
