Description Adaptation Theory and Practice offers an introduction to the theory of adaptation and its implementation in culture. The cultural power of adaptations can be seen everywhere – with examples including films, television, theatre, video games, and graphic novels. This module explores the ideas behind how and why adaptations occur. Seminars will engage with the growing area of adaptation studies, as well as the different types of adaptation that have continued to proliferate in the last few decades. Lectures will give a grounding in the ideas of the field, as well as prepare you for your assessment. Like the field, this module is interdisciplinary and seeks to make connections between different forms of art.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Articulate the different theoretical debates in adaptation theory, and chart their development.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural importance of adaptations and how this is shaped by theoretical approaches
  • Identify key methods of adaptation that can be used for their own creative practice
  • Combine a creative and theoretical approach in identifying art forms and existing works appropriate for adaptation.
