Student media is vital to a thriving university life, and a potential stepping-stone to media and communications work after graduation. This module gives you the chance to produce your own original content, learn skills and techniques that will improve what you create, and think rigorously about how media shapes our world. Working across a range of academic disciplines, the module introduces a variety of journalistic styles, topics, and approaches and shares practical know-how, like how to conduct an interview or put in a Freedom of Information request. Through peer workshops, guided by academic leads, it also helps you to develop your own ideas and projects, from the first spark to the finished article. This module is designed to open media to all, so no prior experience is necessary.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Show an understanding of, and ability to analyse, the role of media in contemporary communities, and its relationship to social, cultural, economic, and political developments;
Develop sound ideas for original media content, demonstrating an awareness of the practical, legal, and commercial contexts for publication;
Create a piece of original media content which applies skills of research, analysis, and communication;
Communicate knowledgeably and critically about at least one genre of media content, such as news stories, magazine features, or narrative podcasts.
