Description The module is designed to facilitate students’ engagement and critical examination of a range of influences driving current healthcare practice. This will include perspectives drawn from contemporary healthcare policy, requirement for safe, high quality care, change & change management, leadership, and service commissioning. It will assist in the development of knowledge, skills and values necessary to adapt to the changing requirements of modern health services, patient populations and new models of delivery and emerging professional roles. It will support the transition of students to emerging graduate practitioners in the contemporary world of healthcare as fully registered, autonomous physiotherapists able to lead the profession at local, national and international levels.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the contribution of health care policy in driving contemporary healthcare provision through critical exploration of health policy directives, governance and professional regulation in delivering accountable healthcare practice
  • Demonstrate critical understanding of the importance of developing confidence and capacity to influence, initiate and lead change within an ethical leadership framework
  • Critically evaluate potential practitioner and service improvement / development through an understanding of leadership and change management in healthcare
  • Demonstrate a critical appreciation of changing healthcare markets, business planning and commissioning within ethical and legal frameworks
  • Critically evaluate professional and career development needs in terms of key attributes necessary for contemporary, high quality physiotherapy practice in the changing healthcare environment and appraise the strengths and weaknesses of own clinical practice, demonstrating capability to address identified deficits
  • Critically evaluate the evolving nature and scope of contemporary physiotherapy practice and the implications for practitioner professional development
