This module prepares students for physiotherapy practice in clinic-based settings focused on the care of patients presenting with musculoskeletal problems. This is a major area of physiotherapy practice and undergraduate physiotherapy students are typically allocated at least one practice-based placement in these settings during the programme. Students will build upon foundational knowledge developed in Year 1 of the programme (e.g. anatomy and physiology) by applying this knowledge to address typical problems experienced by people referred to outpatient physiotherapy settings with musculoskeletal conditions (e.
g. lateral ankle sprain, neck pain, frozen shoulder), developing common principles and core skills that may then be applied across a range of clinical conditions. Development of knowledge and skills relevant to musculoskeletal assessment and treatment will be facilitated by a case-based learning approach built around scenarios which reflect the complexity of current musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. The module has an emphasis on fostering the student’s problem-solving and self-directed learning skills through engaging active-learning approaches and a substantial practical component.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrating knowledge of assessment frameworks and treatment skills for patients presenting with common health conditions encountered in an outpatient setting.
Recognise the role of physiotherapy in person-centred management of patients in this setting and how physiotherapy contributes to inter-professional management in this setting.
Demonstrate and apply core practical skills (e.g. manual therapy) appropriate to patient-centred physiotherapy musculoskeletal assessment and management.
Demonstrate evidence-informed, person-centred clinical reasoning to provide safe and effective musculoskeletal rehabilitation
Show an ability to adapt practice to varying personal and environmental contexts that may be encountered in musculoskeletal physiotherapy settings
Identify appropriate exercise and activity prescription for patients with specific health conditions and an understanding of criteria for related progression (or regression).
