The Direct Observation of Examination Skills module allows for the continuous assessment of placement-based activity through work-based assessments. The work-based assessments are alignment to the learning activity scheduled during placements. The work-based assessments will allow the students to be observed in their clinical practice with a focus on communication and examination skills. These activities undertaken as part of this module will enable students to obtain feedback and feedforward that will facilitate their performance in the clinical core end of year OSCE.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate observed examination skills on real or simulated patients
Demonstrate engagement with clinical activities during time placement
Develop a reflective and critical understanding of personal clinical skills that may need further development prior to undertaken further summative assessment
Use feedback to enhance performance of critical clinical skills.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Completion of workbased assessments (typically 5-8). Each workbased assessment must be completed while on placement. Students must demonstrate satisfactory completion of the assessment by achieving at least a score of 50% in each individual DOES assessment (the programme passing threshold).
Reassessment: If a student fails to complete one or more DOES assessments, they will be expected to undertake the missed DOES assessment during the supplementary period. They are only expected to make good on those assessments missed/not taken.
If a student achieves less than the required 50% in one of more DOES assessment, they will be expected to undertake the DOES falling below the 50% threshold for success during the supplementary period. They are only expected to make good on those assessments falling below the 50% threshold.
