Description
This module will introduce students to visual anthropology via ethnographic film. In five two-hour sessions, we will view and discuss five ethnographic films representing a range of approaches to ethnographic film making and covering a range of anthropological themes. Key readings will help to situate the films in relation to the genre of ethnographic films, the field of visual anthropology, and the wider debates the films engage.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of ethnographic film to the field of visual anthropology
Describe a particular ethnographic film and situate it in the context of the anthropological debates it addresses
Consider the suitability of film as a means of disseminating anthropological research, ideas and/or arguments
