Students must take 100 Credits worth of modules from a range of science, maths and English for Academic Purposes modules. These are determined by the students’ destination degree, and English language skills.

Description
This module is designed to give students a level of knowledge and skill in aspects of molecular and human biology that would equip them for undergraduate learning in the biological sciences. The content will include:
• Basic cell structure, function and differentiation
• Genetic control of protein structure and function
• Mutation and disease
• Pathogens and immunity
This material will largely be delivered in small group lectures, but will be reinforced by problem-based tutorials, lab-based practicals, student presentation workshops, and set essays. Several of these sessions will be formatively assessed, allowing the development of a range of academic skills like problem solving, verbal and written communication and group skills.
Students will be introduced to appropriate subject specific learning resources (i.e. textbooks, scientific magazine (i.e. New Scientist) and newspaper articles) and will be encouraged to use these to undertake some independent learning to reinforce the delivered content.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a level of understanding of the biological topics covered in the module that would equip them for study in a degree programme.
Apply academic English language skills in the written communication of biological science conceptsBe able to summarise, and synthesise biological science information from textbooks, by undertaking independent study and research.
Perform basic practical laboratory tasks with direction and supervision.
Manipulate experimental data and discuss results with guidance, showing some awareness of limitations and greater complexities of the experimental system.
