Description This module aims to provide a good foundation for studies in Organic Chemistry. The first part of the module covers important topics such as nomenclature, simple isomerism and “arrow pushing” mechanisms. The concepts studied are then applied to the reactions of sp, sp2 and sp3 carbon centres, for example: alkanes, alkenes, arenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes & ketones, carboxylic acids and polymers.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of organic chemistry: nomenclature, isomerism and arrow pushing mechanisms;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic chemistry associated with the organic functional groups covered;
  • Apply functional group chemistry to suggest basic organic reaction schemes.
