Description
This compulsory module provides key skills-based geoscience training preparing students for independent field and research (dissertation) project work in years 3 and 4. This module includes both UK residential fieldwork and classroom-based lecture and practical sessions. Skill development will focus on data collection, analysis and interpretation, presentation and other transferable skills. Bespoke theoretical and skills training for the different degree pathways is included.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Develop practical fieldwork skills and experience that complements core Year 1 and 2 classroom-based courses and year 3/4 independent projects
Foster a critical approach to problem solving, enhance teamwork and time management skills.
Record, analyse and interpret a range of geoscience field data.
Develop 2D and 3D visualizations of geological datasets.
Design and plan an independent research project, including develop hypotheses/research questions and determine appropriate tests of these, field plans, logistics and budget as well as adhering to ethical and health and safety procedures and gaining adequate permissions and approvals.
Create high-quality and appropriate representations of data, e.g., graphs, schematics, summary figures, models and maps.
Present succinct and well-structured data presentations
