This module introduces battery technology and battery manufacture, covering the electrode chemistry, cell design and manufacture, sustainability and characterisation of batteries and their components. The concepts are taught to enable the students gain insight into the fundamental concepts of battery technology, the techniques used to evaluate key performance indicators, manufacturing processes used and the wider challenges around sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
to identify, classify and describe the performance of batteries and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques (EA2)
Demonstrate a knowledge of key characteristics of testing equipment, processes, or products relating to batteries (EP2)
Understand and evaluate business, customer and user needs, including considerations such as the wider engineering context, public perception and aesthetics (D1)
Investigate and define the problem with selecting, designing or manufacturing batteries, identifying any constraints including environmental and sustainability limitations; ethical, health, safety, security and risk issues; intellectual property; codes of practice and standards (D2)
