Description The module will extend students' current understanding of developmental psychology to develop their understanding of key topics in the study of anxiety in children and adolescents, including emotional development and diagnosis, risk factors, and approaches to prevention and intervention. Research has consistently found that age represents a risk factor for the development of different anxiety disorders. Moving through the study of anxious affect developmentally, the module will outline risk factors and impact associated with different anxiety disorders on student engagement on social and academic elements in teaching and learning contexts, as well as educational outcomes. In addition, its goal is to advance student skills to engage with independent and group work, as well as your ability to communicate core material orally and in written form.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • independently research topics in the study of anxiety in a developmental context, critically evaluate theoretical and empirical papers in this area of research, and apply their understanding to outline the impact of anxiety on education and implications for prevention and intervention.

    These skills will enable students to organize material effectively and to communicate critical thinking both in writing and verbally in key topics in the study of anxiety and developmental psychopathology more broadly, and including:
  • The classification of anxiety in a developmental context.
  • Key features associated with different anxiety disorders
  • Factors that contribute to patterns of continuity and discontinuity of anxiety across development.
  • Theoretical and methodological approaches used to understand the (1) origins of anxiety in children and adolescents,
  • And (2) impact on the development of social and academic skills in teaching and learning contexts
  • How theory and research have informed the development of prevention and treatment methods in anxiety in children and adolescents and application to education

Reassessement: resubmisison of failed component where overall module mark is less than the pass mark.
