Description The module introduces students to data management systems, focusing on both providing a critical overview of how the different parts of the system work together to form the basic framework to allow for good business analytics, and the practical applications of databases with an emphasis on relational databases. In particular, it focuses on identifying the fundamentals, evolution and structures of information systems, how data is integrated in these systems and way they both support organisational decision making. Also, as big data becomes more and more prevalent in the business context, we will engage with more ethical aspects and its implications on both the firm and the society in general.

The module with integrate core lectures and workshops with guest lectures and case studies to situate the issues in a realistic context. In this module software tools appropriate for the subject matter being taught will be used to demonstrate the practical implementation of the techniques learnt. The specific tools will be reviewed regularly to ensure we are utilising the most current and industry relevant ones.
Learning Outcomes By the end of this module students should be able to:
  • Identify and evaluate different information systems and cutting-edge developments in recent data strategy and technologies
  • Critically discuss the role of data in information systems in supporting management coordination, decision-making, and digital strategy implementation in organisations
  • Critically analyse data architecture and data governance structures, and the process of data management
  • Evaluate the role of data management systems within the business context.
  • Critically evaluate and discuss the role of responsible business and ethical considerations related to managing data in information systems.
  • Explain what Big Data is, its importance to businesses and the required technologies for managing it.

38158-02 : Individual Case Study (3000 words) : Coursework (75%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: 15 minute group presentation (25%) and 3,000 word individual case study report (75%)

Reassessment by failed component: The Group presentation will be reassessed a critical analysis of the work presented by the group (1,000 words) and 3,000 word individual case study report (75%)
