Description The module aims to develop communication skills that are necessary for effective academic interaction within Biosciences. All key language areas will be covered with a focus on academic writing and communication. The module will build student confidence to integrate with the academic community and participate effectively with the subject area.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Communicate orally with confidence and participate effectively in practical, laboratory sessions, engaging with lecturers, demonstrators, assistants and fellow students. Students should be able to follow instructions and discuss findings, ask for clarification if needed, observe health and safety regulations as well as analyse and accurately report on the sessions’ proceedings
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the process, the component parts and the effective academic writing conventions required for academic writing
  • Critically engage with longer texts and subject specific research articles to develop the necessary, language detective reading techniques for use in students’ own writing
Assessment 38209-01 : Continuous Assessment Tests : Coursework (30%)
38209-02 : Take Home Essay : Coursework (50%)
38209-03 : Group Poster Presentation : Coursework (20%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Course work 30%: quizzes through the course
Final assessment 50%: 1,000-word essay/report and 20% presentation

Reassessment: 1,000-word essay/report (70%) and Presentation (30 %)
