Description This module will look at Europe in the context of history's most devastating war. Starting with the political and economic build up in the 1930s, it will debunk the Myth of the Blitzkrieg and highlight that WW II was not only a total war but also a racial war of annihilation that went well beyond the Holocaust. It will show that the Allies, perhaps with the exception of the Soviets, won the war first and foremost in their factories and shipyards and not on the battlefield. The last part of the module will look at European societies after the end of the war and will try to explain how Europe was able to recover relatively quick in the shadow of the Cold War and move into the so-called 'Golden Age' of a new democratic and consumer society.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Analyse and explain key events and historical processes relevant to the subject under scrutiny.
  • Analyse and explain reasons for and implications of these events and processes.

  • Work with an appropriate degree of learner independence to explain and analyse the material under scrutiny.
