The people of Tudor and Stuart England lived through a period of extraordinary change, with transformations in the structure and experience of religion, society and government as well as new exposure to a global world. This course seeks to introduce and understand what it meant and felt like to live through this period of changing realities and horizons. We will focus in particular on the impact of changes at the national level on the lived experience of ordinary people – looking at areas such as mental health and the emotions, popular belief, and the harsh realities of colonisation. Primary sources will feature heavily in the module, and include: letters, diaries, popular print, travel accounts, material artefacts and court records.
