Description Supervision, Coaching and Mentoring in organisations is a skills focussed module grounded in empirical research, and theoretical knowledge and methodologies from several disciplines. Its starting point is an appreciation that supervision, coaching and mentoring knowledge and skills are fundamental, in combination, to the process of professional development and performance management, and therefore crucial to effective service delivery.

The module aims to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and values required to supervise, coach and mentor social work learners in Social Work, Social Care and Health organisations. It will enable participants to explore and evaluate differing approaches to performance improvement within their role, so reinforcing their leadership/educator role within the organisation.

For those undertaking the module as part of the Advanced or Post Graduate Certificate in Practice Education, the module will connect with and build on the supervision knowledge and skills established within Practice Education Stage1 and Stage 2.

Prospective candidates should note that they are expected to undertake independent study, participate in tutor led activities, connect with their peers to complete practical and reflective activities and organise opportunities for supervisory, coaching and mentoring skills development
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understanding the difference between supervision, coaching and mentoring In reference to research and models for practice
  • Define the skills and values required for effective supervision, coaching and mentoring conversations and demonstrate these inaction.
  • Facilitate reflection and negotiate clear learning objectives and action plans In supervisor, coaching and mentoring encounters
  • Identify some of the key ethical issues with coaching and mentoring in the workplace.
