Writing for Money is all about the different ways that writing generates income. It offers students the opportunity to develop professional writing skills – through teaching and through experiential learning on a range of live case studies and examples. Students will learn the basic precepts of professional writing from experts – ranging from success in arts/culture/academic research grant writing from successful projects within the University, to pitching creative work in film, fiction, poetry or writing for stage, to writing effectively to secure funding in the charity and social enterprise sector. Students will also work on live briefs in consultation with local external stakeholders from the charity and social enterprise sector, helping to support local civic and community organisations with their own funding proposals and bids, allowing them to develop industry-specific skills, and to network with local stakeholders.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of professional writing and legal and policy issues related to writing for funding.
Demonstrate skills in professional research, marketing, and financial analysis.
Consider the implications of a funding bid for a range of different stakeholders, using 360-degree analytical tools.
Reflect appropriately and self-reflexively on their own experiences on the module and identify strategies for future professional development.
