Description This module will examine the multiple and sometimes divergent ways in which the crusading movement intertwined itself with the many cultures and societies of medieval Europe.
Each week students will be asked to consider a prominent theme within crusade historiography and to explore it through several case studies (each of them from different regions of Europe) and a rich variety of sources.
This course will encourage students to consider crusading as a cultural force that spoke to a wide range of concerns within medieval Europe, rather than intermittent military campaigns against perceived enemies of the Christian faith in the eastern Mediterranean.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Analyse and explain key events and historical processes relevant to the subject under scrutiny.
  • Analyse and explain reasons for and implications of these events and processes.
  • Identify the main scholarly views on the subject under investigation.
  • Work with an appropriate degree of learner independence to explain and analyse the material under scrutiny.
  • Communicate explanation and analysis of the subject clearly and effectively in writing.
