This module gives students an intensive introduction to the Latin language. Classes introduce the basic concepts required to understand and learn an inflected language, cover the essential elements of accidence and syntax, and focus on a core vocabulary of common words. Class exercises provide practice in both passive and active use of the students' developing knowledge of Latin.
Students are also introduced to examples of real Latin usage drawn from literary texts and epigraphic sources and begin to acquire techniques for understanding and translating these and for working with parallel texts and translations.
