Description In this module students consolidate linguistic skills gained in Latin 1 and 2, or at A-level or equivalent. Students work through selected aspects of advanced Latin grammar, continue to add to the range of their Latin vocabulary, and practise unseen translation. They work on selected literary texts in prose and/or verse, using scholarly commentaries and developing their dictionary skills as well as their commentary skills. Students learn to comment and reflect on their own and others' translations. Scholarly literature is read alongside set texts to deepen and contextualise understanding.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of Latin grammatical structures;
  • Translate with fluency and comment critically on Latin texts from a seen selection;
  • Analyse and translate unseen passages with fluency.
  • Analyse and comment on translations
  • Deploy understanding of Latin text and scholarship in commentary and/or essay tasks.
