This module delivers core study skills for students studying social anthropology to support their transition from secondary to higher education. The module provides an introduction to social anthropology, with a focus on understanding some of the key conceptual and methodological underpinnings of the discipline. The module also allows students to familiarise themselves with the key skills necessary for success at university, such as note-taking, essay writing, academic integrity, oral presentation, and the ability to use library resources.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Engage in debate from an anthropological standpoint in order to analyse social and cultural phenomena;
Show knowledge of how anthropologists use ethnographic data in order to construct conceptual frameworks;
Demonstrate an understanding of principles of academic integrity and good academic practice;
Locate sources in the library and on the internet; prepare a bibliography and reference sources correctly.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
1 x 1200 word essay (60%);
2-minute contribution to a group oral presentation (overall length of group presentation is 2 minutes x number of members + 2 minutes) and an individual poster (electronic submission) on the same topic (40%).
Marks for the contribution to group presentation + poster are individual and feedback on both is provided via the poster submission portal.
Reassessment:
Same as assessment.
Group presentation may be substituted by individual presentation.
