This module will provide an introduction to the industry standards that must be met for materials, structures, and processes to be used in space. Students will learn to evaluate materials and manufacturing processes for use in extreme thermal, radiation, and microgravity environments. They will develop an understanding of the role space-based research can play in advanced materials development.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand and apply the strict constraints from commercial and space agency standards to the materials decision-making process for space
Demonstrate an understanding of the application of manufacturing techniques for non-structural space-grade components
Demonstrate an understanding of the application of manufacturing techniques for spacecraft structural elements
Articulate the challenges of applying advanced manufacturing techniques both for and in space
