Module Code 02 39056
Module Lead Laura Jones
Level Masters Level
Credits 60
Semester Full Term
Pre-requisites
Co-requisites
Restrictions To pass the module requires an overall mark of 50%; and for all three elements (protocol presentation, poster and dissertation/paper) to achieve, separately, a mark of at least 50%)

The three assessments test different elements of the learning outcomes. All three assessments must therefore be passed independently to secure a ‘pass’ for this module.
Contact Hours Lecture-16 hours
Guided independent study-584 hours
Total: 600 hours
Exclusions
Description This module aims to equip students with the skills needed to develop and conduct a piece of research in the field of population sciences that has the potential for publication within a relevant journal. Students will experience data collection, management, and analysis, prior to writing up in the form of an academic paper or dissertation.

Students will have the option to identify a project from a list of feasible and appropriate projects generated by Academic Staff. They will (wherever possible) be allocated one of their project preferences and will work with a supervisor (or supervisors) during Semester 1 to further develop a research protocol for the project to be carried out in Semester 2.

The module is delivered across both Semester 1 and Semester 2. There will be group contact time and teaching in Semester 1, which will involve lectures and methodological seminars where students will meet to discuss project ideas and development. Towards the end of Semester 1, each student will give a summative oral presentation (15% of module) of the research proposal to the group and a panel of academics and will submitting a written research proposal for formative assessment. If necessary, ethical approval for the proposed project will be sought via the Internal Research Ethics Committee (IREC) and scoping work (e.g. familiarisation with the evidence base around their project) undertaken in Semester 1.

In Semester 2 students will work under close supervision to conduct their research project. Students will have tutorials with their supervisor on a regular basis and these will identify problems with data collection, monitor progress and support data management and delivery, enabling the student to fully engage with the research process from initial development of ideas to completion. Students will also have access to statistics and research skills clinics throughout both semesters to supplement supervision.

In Semester 2, students will submit their project write up in two parts: (1) a dissertation or academic paper written in the style of an appropriate journal (summative assessment – 75% of module) and (2) an academic poster of their research findings (summative assessment – 10% of module).
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a sound, broad and detailed understanding of an issue relating to public and global health sciences
  • Display competence in carrying out, analysing, and reporting a piece of research in population sciences which is scientifically valid and practically manageable within the given time frame.
  • Appropriately apply the generic skills gained during the taught elements of the programme
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the research ethical approval process, obtaining any necessary research ethical approval for the proposed project
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate the research effectively in writing, presenting arguments in a clear and logical manner, using appropriate language and correctly referencing all source material.
  • Select information appropriately for an oral presentation of the proposal and communicate it effectively to peers and academics, demonstrating proficient use of information technology.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate research experience and evidence effectively with an academic audience using a variety of presentation strategies
  • Contribute constructively to a discussion of their own and others research ideas and protocols.
