Description This compulsory module is proposed as one of a suite of modules developed for the intercalation MSci Clinical Anatomy. The programme is aimed at medical students in their third or fourth years and therefore includes substantial clinical exposure to consider study human morphological and functional anatomy in health and disease in greater depth than in the MBChB programme.

This module will specifically examine the way anatomical knowledge is informing contemporary clinical practice. In particular students will examine how both morphological and functional anatomy is utilised in the clinical environment for diagnosis, staging and planning treatment of different disease states. Students will work alongside clinicians under supervision, exploring novel modalities examining macro- and micro-anatomical assessments in clinical decision making within the multidisciplinary team meetings and other clinical areas.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance of functional, morphological, macro and micro-anatomical evaluation in contemporary clinical practice in a wide number of clinical disciplines.
  • Apply their knowledge of anatomy to understanding novel modalities of imaging and investigation to evaluating patient’s symptoms and disease and in formulating management plans.
  • Discuss the clinical impact of anatomical features of different disease states, and how these fit within current clinical algorithms, the current state of research and potential future developments.
  • Critically appraise the contemporary clinical literature with respect to the anatomical features of disease and the impact on patient treatment and outcomes.
