This module aims to equip students with skills needed to conceive, design and conduct a feasible piece of research in the field of health management and leadership suitable for publication within a relevant journal.
Students will experience data collection, management and analysis, prior to writing up in the form of an academic paper or dissertation.
Project supervisors will be allocated in consultation with the module co-ordinator. Students will meet with their supervisor(s) in Semester 1 to develop a research proposal for the project to be carried out in Semester 2, with further supervisory meetings throughout. If necessary, ethical approval for the proposed project will be obtained and scoping work (e.g. familiarisation with local policy and practice) undertaken.
The module is delivered across the first and second semesters. There will be group contact time and teaching in the first semester will involve lectures and seminars where students will meet to discuss project ideas and development. Towards the end of Semester 1, each student will give an oral presentation (summative assessment – 10% of module) of the research proposal to the group, submitting a written research proposal for formative assessment. They will also make submissions to the Internal Research Ethics Committee as appropriate for their chosen project.
In Semester 2 students will work under close supervision to conduct their research project. Students will have tutorials with their supervisor on a regular basis and these will identify problems with data collection, monitor progress and support data management and delivery, enabling the student to fully engage with the research process from concept to completion. Students will also have access to statistics and research skills clinics throughout both semesters to supplement supervision.
Towards the end of Semester 2 students will present an academic poster of their research findings (summative assessment – 15% of module) and will also submit their project write up either as a dissertation or academic paper written in the style of an appropriate journal (summative assessment – 75% of module).
