Description This module will be delivered in Year 3, commencing in semester 1 and spans the whole academic year. The module covers areas of health, disease and therapeutics related to disorders of mental health and behaviours, cancer, the human immunodeficiency virus, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, solid organ transplant, and toxicology. It introduces the care and treatment of people who are approaching the end of life.

The module will integrate knowledge from earlier modules, particularly pharmacology, pharmaceutical science, and pharmacy practice, and evaluate and apply it to the specific context of people living with the conditions. Anatomy teaching will focus on the musculoskeletal system.

Throughout this module the pharmacology and therapeutics of the treatment and prevention of disease will be taught with consideration of both individual person therapeutics and population level. Prior learning in evidence-based medicine from other modules will be integrated and applied in this context. The appraisal of reputable and evidence-based information will be approached so that students develop the skills to provide appropriate advice and information to empower people or their advocate to engage in shared decision-making about health and wellbeing and adapt this to their needs.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Apply prior learning to and integrate it with the new learning content of this module.
  • Describe the pathology, epidemiology, risk factors, treatment and monitoring of people with disorders of mental health or behaviour and apply this to the critical evaluation of therapeutic case-based scenarios.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of cancer and of systemic anti-cancer therapies and apply this to the monitoring of treatment for both beneficial and adverse effects.
  • Discuss the virology of common viral infections, the appropriate use of antivirals and apply this to the monitoring of treatment for both beneficial and adverse effects.
  • Describe the pharmacological options available to provide comfort and well-being in palliative and end-of-life care and apply this to for the symptomatic relief of pain, terminal restlessness and agitation, respiratory secretions, and breathlessness.
  • Describe the epidemiology, risk factors and treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and apply this to the critical evaluation of therapeutic case-based scenarios.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of inflammation, auto-immune disease, and organ transplant rejection.
  • Discuss the pharmacological management of inflammation, auto-immune disorders, and organ transplant rejection, and apply this to the critical evaluation of therapeutic case-based scenarios.
  • Describe the epidemiology of drug poisoning and principles of clinical toxicology and apply this to the management of overdose.
  • Appraise the current advances in pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics and their application to the management of drug therapy, with reference to areas studied in this module.
  • Discuss the factors that can influence prescribing decisions, including own personal views and beliefs, and work to share decisions relating to medicines use.
  • Evaluate the benefit/harm of a pharmacological interventions and communicate information about risks associated with management or treatment of conditions to support people's understanding and awareness of when to seek help or advice.
  • Appraise and provide appropriate advice and information to empower people or their advocates to engage in shared decision-making about health and wellbeing and adapt this to their needs.
Assessment 39113-01 : Group Presentation (non-clinical) : Presentation (10%)
39113-02 : Therapeutic Care Plan (non-clinical) : Coursework (15%)
39113-03 : Case Studies (non-clinical) : Coursework (15%)
39113-04 : End of Year Exam (non-clinical) : Exam (Centrally timetabled) - Computer based (60%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Coursework:

Group oral presentation (10%): theme focused (non-clinical)

Written Task (15%): therapeutic care plan (non-clinical)

Written Task (15%): case studies (non-clinical)

Examinations:

On-campus timed closed book: MCQ/SAQ 3-hour (60%) (non-clinical)

Reassessment:

Students who fail to achieve a minimum module mark of 50% will be reassessed in every element (examination and coursework) in which they achieved less than 50%. This will take place in the supplementary exam period.

Students who achieve a minimum module mark of 50% but fail to achieve more than 40% in any elements, will have to resit those elements.

Group work: upon submission of group work, students are requested to declare if any students did not contribute equally to the assessment. If unequal contribution is declared, each student is asked to independently complete a 'Self and peer assessment form', scoring different aspects of contribution and teamwork. Individual student marks can be reduced based on their contribution. A failure of a single student would require re-submission of an alternative aligned assessment, appropriately weighted to an individual assessment.
