Description This module gives students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills, to an authentic challenge, in collaboration with a community organisation. Students will undertake a minimum of 200 hours voluntary placement work within a sport or exercise setting. Students will be introduced to the principles of becoming enterprising and active citizens as they work on collaborative projects. Students will work in small groups with the organisation to identify a mutually interesting challenge and design an appropriate project. This could be research on an area of concern, evaluating existing provision, or designing resources for the organisation, for example. They will produce a project proposal and timeline, which forms an internal hurdle. The group will then conduct the project, and create one multimedia presentation summarising their findings and recommendations.

As individuals, students will produce an executive report for the organisation, summarising their project, findings and recommendations. They will also complete a learning plan and a short personal reflection interview.

This M-level version runs alongside the H-level Professional Dissertation, allowing cross-year collaboration. The learning outcomes, placement hours and assessment details differentiate the two levels.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate and apply the skills of self direction and originality, creative thinking, independent learning, utilising resources and relevant information and to seek expert advice as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively to identify, design, and conduct a project in a community organisation
  • Present a comprehensive project proposal showing a conceptual understanding of the design, theoretical grounding and justification of the project
  • Work as a group to present the project findings in an accessible, thoughtful and accurate multimedia presentation
  • Answer questions critically and insightfully on the multimedia presentation in a live Q&A
  • As an individual, produce an executive report summarising the project's conduct, findings and theoretically justified recommendations for the organisation itself and for the wider sector
  • Critically reflect upon their own personal development across the whole module and contextualise to their future professional development
