Description
Over the fourth year, BDS students will have the opportunity to further develop an understanding of their professional identity in the healthcare team in different work environments. Placements play a much bigger part of the course in year 4 with students also attending general hospital placements requiring students to reflect on their experience in a self directed manner and obtain patient feedback.
In addition, the course requires students to complete mandatory training on a regular basis in a number of areas including safeguarding, infection control, life support and information governance.
This non-credit bearing module will be used to timetable personal development sessions for students in year 3 of the Dentistry, such as academic and library skills, resilience training, personal tutoring and to encourage the development of skills critical for the students to achieve their full potential on the course. In addition, as a clinical programme, it will be used to capture clinical related material for induction and compliance and professionalism work.
To achieve those goals, content will be focused on non-module specific skills acquired during the year. This will not require any additional assessment but emphasises and rewards engagement of students with these elements. The use of a portfolio within the Clinical Assessment and Feedback System will capture longitudinal monitoring and inform progression. It will allow demonstration of the self-evaluation, reflective practice and study skills required of the learner in higher education engaging with other programmes through inter- professional learning, small group work and structured self-directed learning. It aims to further develop communication, management and leadership and professionalism skills with students by this stage of the course demonstrating established skills.
Furthermore, it ensures that students are not progressing with deficiencies in their skills which could put them at a significant disadvantage in the following year.
Students shall normally be required to:
1. Attend, engage with and contribute to all identified compulsory teaching sessions. 2. Engage with their Personal Tutor during tutorials and reflect on the subject and transferable skills that they are developing with the aid of feedback that they have received. 3. Engage with professional / clinical responsibilities and requirements. 4. Demonstrate a reflective approach to teaching and practice 5. Complete the required elements for the year of a longitudinal electronic portfolio
