Description
Over the fifth year, BDS students should be able to demonstrate that they meet the requirements of a safe beginner and are fit for sign up to the GDC register. Placements are the main part of this year but there are other professional obligations such as engagement with mandatory training for their foundation year.
This non-credit bearing module will also be used to timetable personal development sessions for students in year 5 of the Dentistry, such as academic and library skills, resilience training, personal tutoring and to encourage the development of skills critical for the students to achieve their full potential on the course. In addition, as a clinical programme, it will be used to capture clinical related material for induction and compliance and professionalism work.
To achieve those goals, content will be focused on non-module specific skills acquired during the year. This will not require any additional assessment but emphasises and rewards engagement of students with these elements. The use of a portfolio within the Clinical Assessment and Feedback System will capture longitudinal monitoring and inform progression. It will allow demonstration of the self-evaluation, reflective practice and study skills required of the learner in higher education engaging with other programmes particularly nursing and the School of Hygiene and Therapy through inter - professional learning, small group work and structured self-directed learning. It aims to further develop communication, management and leadership and professionalism skills with students by this stage of the course demonstrating established skills.
Students shall normally be required to:
1. Attend, engage with and contribute to all identified compulsory teaching sessions. 2. Engage with their Personal Tutor during tutorials and reflect on the subject and transferable skills that they are developing with the aid of feedback that they have received. 3. Engage with professional / clinical responsibilities and requirements. 4. Demonstrate a reflective approach to teaching and practice 5. Complete the required elements of a longitudinal electronic portfolio 6. Complete the Education transition documents for foundation training.
By the end of this module students will demonstrate the professional requirements for GDC registration.
