Description The module explores the history, politics and cultural memory of the West German student movement and its violent offshoot, the Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF) aka the Baader-Meinhof Group, during the period 1967–1977. Materials studied will include contemporary media reports, terrorist manifestos and communiqués, a selection of documentary and feature films as well as (semi-) fictional writings by various authors on protest and terror in West Germany.

The classes will be taught in a mixture of English and German
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding of the motivations, aims and methods of the student movement and of terrorist groups in West Germany in the period 1967-1977;
  • demonstrate a good understanding of cultural and media responses to political protest and political violence of the 1960s and 1970s as well as of their transnational dimensions (France, Italy, UK, USA), especially in the context of religiously and politically motivated terrorism today.
  • demonstrate enhanced developed powers of textual analysis, academic discussion and essay writing.
