Description This module will explore the formation of some of the most representative iconic figures in the Hispanic world across different periods.
Those figures will be studied in relation to the ways they have forged ideas of Hispanic culture and identity as well as the way they have been appropriated both from within and outside the Hispanic world.
They will also be studied in connection to their contribution towards the development of perceptions that continue to shape both popular and cultural imaginaries.
This study will be framed within general discussions relating to basic notions of iconicity and the characteristics and formation of iconic images.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify the key issues in relation to iconicity, the properties of iconic images and processes of iconification.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main icons of the Hispanic world and and the ways in which they contribute towards the construction of and development of cultural attitudes
  • Engage critically with questions of iconicity in the Hispanic world as well as with the ways in which icons mutate and and develop in time and space
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the selected icons in relation to literary, cultural and visual representations that focus on them.
  • Show an ability to discuss critically the key issues in the target language, working towards level B2 and beyond of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (Advanced students only)
  • Show an ability to discuss critically the key issues in the target language, working towards level B1 and beyond of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages (Intermediate students only)
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

1 x 2,000 word essay in English (75%)
1 x 10 minute video presentation in Spanish (25%)
